Clujana is a shoe factory in Cluj-Napoca. The factory was established in 1911 by the Renner family, under the name “Fabrica de Piele Frații Renner & Co”. After the First World War, it became a joint-stock company, changing its name to “Dermata” and becoming the largest shoe factory in Romania.
It was nationalized by the communist government in 1948 and renamed “Janos Herbak Footwear Factory”, then “Cluj Leather and Footwear Factory”, and finally “SC Clujana SA”. In the 80s, the factory became the largest of its kind in Eastern Europe. It had 8,000 employees, with its own tannery departments, sole, shoe, and rubber goods factories. As a result of inadequate management, after the revolution the factory decays, ending up being declared bankrupt in 1999 and closed. At the time, the company had 2,816 workers. Later in 2004, a section of the factory was reopened with only 35 employees, a section that expanded over the years, reaching over 400 employees in 2011. 90% of current production is exported.
From December 2022, it was declared bankrupt.(source)
