Sometra Copșa Mică (abbreviation from Societatea Metalurgică Transilvană) is a company producing lead, zinc and other non-ferrous metals in Romania. The company was founded in 1939 as a private joint-stock company for the production of metallurgical zinc (Prime Western quality), based on the technology of distillation in horizontal retort furnaces, Bierkengang type. The initially installed capacity was 3,000 t/year zinc, which was expanded to 4,000 t/year in 1946. The enterprise was nationalized in 1948.It is controlled, since 1998, by Mytilineos Holdings, which owns 92.79% of the company’s capital.The company had revenues of 587 million lei (177.9 million euros) in the first nine months of 2007.The company’s securities are traded on the Rasdaq market. On February 1, 2009, the activity at Sometra was suspended due to the drop in the price of metals on the international market.
According to several studies on environmental protection, Copșa Mică is not only the most polluted city in Romania, but also the most polluted in Europe. According to data from the Ministry of the Environment, the soil in the Copșa Mică area is heavily polluted on an area of about 3,400 hectares.
